Snow Trip Essentials: The Down Low and Hot Tips

Are you heading down to the snow for the first time this winter? There are so many choices to make on where to go, what to pack and the unwritten mountain rules! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed so The Perfect Snow Travel Experts have put together a list of the must things to bring and top tips to remember. So less time worrying and more time shredding!

Invest in the gear – You can always get away with using or borrowing someone else’s jacket or pants but there are a few things you need to remember to make sure you make the most out of your snow holiday. Waterproof or water resistant material is a minimum with a good set of gloves that keep you warm throughout the day. Mittens can be popular in colder days as the fingers are  combined together this helps to generate more heat, Although if you’re constantly having to handle gear, adjusting snowboard bindings or zippers, Gloves tend to be a preferred choice as they offer better dexterity.

Chill out – Whether snowboarding or skiing, remember that you’re there to have fun and enjoy your time, it doesn’t matter how fast you’re going or how many runs you can do in a day. Line up and don’t push in front of people. Aussie snow attracts a range of people with a mixture of all levels of skiers and boarders, so being accommodating and respectful in chairlift and T-Bar lines is important and remember to slow down and be mindful of others.

Lessons - Many beginners make the first mistake of heading straight up the chair lift and having no idea on how to get off, having mild freak outs on how high they are and on what to do once they reach the top. Start with lessons, on your first day it’s a good way to learn the basics whether its with Pizza and French fries (skiers’ beginner basics not the food!), Falling Leaf or landing on your toosh the whole time. The bonus with this you get to skip the queue and have right of way. This is also a great option to send the kids whilst parents can have some chill time on or off the slopes.

T- Bar and Pommers - What are they and how does it work! A snowboarder’s worst nightmare with that one burning leg. Tips on how to nail this unique ride is to be prepared, do not sit down, do not  skate off the track and remember if you fall off LET GO!

Boots! The right fitting boots are a MUST, if your feet hurt you’re not going to have fun, if your toes are squashed you’re not going have fun, if your feet are cold you’re not going have fun, if you have blisters from rubbing you’re not going have fun! So the right fitting boots are essential. If hiring or renting boots they are most likely going to be packed out and loose so try going tighter or a size smaller than normal.

Forecasts - Keep an eye out on the snow reports, there is nothing worse than heading up the mountain in a full force blizzard with all the chairlifts closed and a complete whiteout! Or even worse, nursing a hangover from the night before whilst it’s the one day that the sky is a clear bluebird and  there is fresh POW!
